Re: Cable Street Park
“HI Steve, what a great job you have done with this community newsletter!! Thank you. I will look forward to the next edition.
Possible future topic: the history of Cable St Park. It’s a very interesting story, and a lot of people in Main Beach and beyond don’t seem to know about the importance of this tiny and much neglected park. There are some photos in the old Surf Pavilion showing cable laying work.
Sadly, the Council decided to approve a development adjacent to the park that doesn’t appear to have any side setback, so no doubt there will be an annexing of the park during construction and a permanent intrusion once the building is complete. The previous approval on that site did have a contribution condition requiring the developer to spend $1M on Cable Park, but that approval lapsed. The new developer doesn’t have to do anything at all – see the rest of Deborah’s comment below
Steve, I have been trying at different times for over twenty years to publicise the very interesting story of the trans Pacific cable.
I believe that this will be best done by erecting beside the coastal walkway a brass plaque giving its history. Very few people ever go into the park but hundreds pass along the walkway each day.
About fifteen years ago I made up a waterproof history and placed it on a stake on the site. It is long gone.
My latest effort was a missive to Councillor Baildon who dutifully buried it by passing it onto Council for comment/action.
Best of luck with your endeavours, Cheers, Graeme Muller.
Good luck with your efforts to publicise this important
Thanks for your comment Graeme, it was Deborah Kelly who kicked this off – you can joon her discussion on our Village Chat Lounge (facebook group villagers) on the link https://bit.ly/34E3qOf – I only have one gear, and that is to keep focusing on what can next – no matter how small or insignificant it may seem -talking at this level is a new beginning I think – Steve
The community bears a double burden when developers are given extensive permission to set up storage and/or access to awkward construction sites on parkland. Not only are our pretty suburbs increasingly losing their character by loss of open spaces and shadows through cramping as much as possible on tiny lots, but now even our parklands are in jeopardy. The Council has responsibility.
