A great Villager Resource

Phillip Park Main Beach

Who was ‘Philip Park’ named after?

Information and words kindly provided by Lyn Wright

The Main Beach Progress Association applied for the Open Space on The Spit be named after Prince Philip in reference to his support of the saving the Franklin River from being dammed in Tasmania. The use of a Royal name must be sanctioned by that member of the Royal Family, Prince Philip who granted the ascent, suggested the name Philip Park this being the usual form. In these times 1983, Seaworld Drive only went as far as Sea World hence the comment “north of Seaworld Drive”. The Gold Coast City Council approved the name Philip Park after this ascent was granted.
