Gold Coast Autonomous Shuttle Trial

The Gold Coast Autonomous Shuttle Trial, fully supported by the RACQ as an initiative to provide another transport option for the community and improve traffic flow.

Main Beach has been chosen from a field of 16 sites, which gives us an opportunity to “test drive” the future. This type of vehicle is being rolled out world wide.

A number of potential sites were evaluated within the Gold Coast and Main Beach has been assessed as being the most suitable for this initial trial.

Key points:

• The service will operate for 12 months in Main Beach and will be offered as a free service to Gold Coast residents, visitors and tourists
• The speed is limited speed to 18kph
• There is space for 6 passengers and 1 chaperone in the air conditioned cab
• At this point, there is yet to be decision regarding dogs, surf boards and bicycles – Remember, all trials need time to make final decisions
• There are mandatory seat belts and a chaperone will be in place at all times – This provides a safety element for anyone travelling
• The route is yet to be confirmed, there is quite a bit of directional software and a large number of signals that are part of the available routes – as a lot of this is underground, there are limited possibilities
• Pick up/drop off points will be considered to minimise any inconvenience to existing traffic movement
• The vehicle will staying within the Main Beach precinct and not going to Marina Mirage or the Spit – at this point.

Due date to commence in December 2021 and more information available online in November 2021.

From what we saw and heard, it seems like a good initiative and something that will benefit Main Beach.

It is designed to help and improve our precinct. It will not be bringing vast crowds and it is planned to bring us a taste of future travel options.
