Veronica Nally

Hi, my name is Veronica Nally and I have been delving into the story about this poor little pooch in our Village flower bed.

This is the story (so far) of the ceramic dog hiding in the flower garden bed outside The Thai Eatery, I’ll bet many of you may not have even noticed him somewhat buried in the undergrowth. His name is ‘Spot – the Dog’ a ceramic sculpture created by Sculptor/Artist Su Brown, from the Gold Coast Potters Association. Su created Spot for the “Swell” Festival at Currumbin Beach in 2007.

After the Festival, Spot the Dog was bought at the ensuing auction by the then incumbent Gold Coast City Councillor for the Main Beach area. He was bought with funds allocated, at that time, for such purchases to enhance the area.
Spot started life on Tedder Avenue’s garden bed outside Shuck. This position apparently had a lot to do with the fact that Gold Coast entity Keith Williams used to walk his dogs down Tedder Avenue to have a coffee and breakfast at Domanis.  Domanis originally were located opposite Shuck. Kerri Fisher will be able to give you some pearls of wisdom of that time and also how they fed Keith’s dogs sausages unbeknown to him.

No longer hungry and unloved

Milan along with the Thai Eatery have stepped up to ensure that Spot no longer goes hungry.

Su Brown Scultor of Spot

By Su Brown
I sculpted “Spot” in 2007 for the Swell Sculpture competition on Currumbin Beach. Spot is of coil and slab clay construction, decorated with ceramic underglaze and oxide mixes and kiln fired.

Spot was purchased by the then Councilor, Susie Douglas, for display in Tedder Avenue, Main Beach.
I am a local, Tallebudgera Valley, Potter/Sculptor that has now retired. I spend my time teaching pottery for the Gold Coast Potters Association Inc. and also travel to the Northern Territory for several months each year.
I love to help Indigenous Communities with setting up pottery studios and learning how to make pots and clay sculptures. I also provide workshops in the remotest communities and schools. I take laughter and clay, to those who through isolation would miss the joy of working with this beautiful medium.
My time, materials, and equipment are donated, funds are raised through crowdfunding.
