Meet The Villager

John-Paul Langbroek
A Lifelong Commitment to the Gold Coast and Newly Appointed Queensland Minister of Education and The Arts.

Firstly Let’s set the tone of this story

In the vibrant tapestry of Main Beach, few threads are as enduring and colourful as that of John-Paul Langbroek, affectionately known as JP. Recently, Claire and I had the pleasure of meeting JP at another wining spot in Main Beach, Le Jardin who took out the ‘Top Gold Coast Cafe of 2024’ last month and a testament to our thriving Villager culture.

JP the MP Langbroek has a nice ring to it!

Congratulations to JP the man under the spotlight of this month’s “Meet The Villager”

A Journey Rooted in Resilience

JP’s story is one of resilience and dedication. Born in Assen, Netherlands, in 1961, his family emigrated to Australia when he was just a few months old, settling in Southport. Growing up on the Gold Coast, JP developed a deep connection to the community, which has been the cornerstone of his life’s work.

From Dentistry to Public Service

After completing his Bachelor of Dental Science with honours at the University of Queensland, JP established dental practices in Surfers Paradise and Ashmore. His commitment to patient care and community health was evident in his practice, where he served residents with dedication and empathy. However, the call to serve the community on a broader scale led him to the realm of politics. In 2004, he was elected as the Member for Surfers Paradise, marking the beginning of a distinguished political career. His tenure has been characterised by roles such as Leader of the Opposition and Minister for Education, Training and Employment. In November 2024, he was sworn in as Queensland’s Minister for Education and the Arts, bringing his extensive experience and passion for education back to the forefront of state governance.

A Champion for Main Beach

While JP grew up in Southport, his affinity for Main Beach is unmistakable. From his early years, he frequented our shores, embracing the local culture and community spirit. His active involvement in local organisations underscores his commitment to addressing community concerns and initiatives. Regularly attending local events and engaging with residents, JP’s presence is a testament to his belief in grassroots engagement. He often emphasises that his role is not confined to the halls of parliament but is deeply rooted in the streets and homes of the community he serves.

Family Ties and Media Presence

JP’s dedication to the Gold Coast community is mirrored by his family’s involvement in the region’s media landscape. His daughter, Bronte Langbroek, has made a name for herself as a radio presenter. She co-hosts the breakfast show “Bronte and Lakey” on Sea FM, bringing her vibrant personality to the airwaves and connecting with listeners across the Gold Coast. Bronte’s success in media reflects the family’s commitment to engaging with and enriching the local community.

Advocacy for the Arts

JP’s passion for the arts is evident in his support for local cultural events. Recently, he supported Lynne Goddard’s successful “Magic of Music” event held at the Emporium Hotel on Seaworld Drive. His enthusiasm for such initiatives highlights his belief in the power of the arts to enrich our community and bring people together.

Looking Ahead

As the Gold Coast continues to evolve, JP’s commitment to the community remains steadfast. He envisions a future where the area thrives economically while preserving the qualities that make it unique. JP’s blend of professional experience, community involvement, and personal dedication positions him as a pivotal figure in guiding the community towards a prosperous and harmonious future.

In John-Paul Langbroek, Queensland, the Gold Coast, and our village of Main Beach have not just a representative but a neighbour, a friend, and a tireless advocate. JP’s story is a testament to the power of community, the importance of perseverance and consistency in service, and the enduring bond between a place and its people. As we look to the future, JP’s journey offers inspiration and a reminder of the impact one individual can have when they choose to serve with passion and integrity.

Who We Are

The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation Australia is a uniquely patient-led functional cancer research and advocacy organisation (charity) with a deep knowledge and understanding of cholangiocarcinoma and other bile-related cancers, including liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic cancers.

What We Do

This aggressive cancer is at the heart of a growing health crisis, with cases rising by 60% over the past decade and increasingly affecting younger Australians aged 30 to 50 years. With no meaningful treatment options outside of surgery—available to only 15% of patients, 85% of whom experience recurrence—and survival rates of just 2–5% for metastatic cases, which form the majority, urgent action is critical.

Co-founded by Steve and Claire Holmes, with Steve as an eight-year survivor of late-stage, Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, the foundation develops and delivers vital cancer response strategies that enhance the standard of care. Tools like the Patient Navigator Journal transform complex medical information into effective, easy-to-follow steps, improving survival outcomes and driving innovation to benefit today’s patients with today’s science.

Guided by Steve’s extraordinary journey, the foundation’s mission is to develop and support early detection, curative treatments, and prevention, while fostering a supportive community. Now the largest bile duct patient community outside the USA, the foundation provides a vital blend of lived and professional expertise—serving as an essential resource for Australia and a model for addressing many other cancer types.
