The Villager
Community building is more than shared spaces, events, or resources. It is about nurturing a deep sense of belonging and common purpose. It’s about how ordinary people, ‘villagers’, can manifest extraordinary results from small, simple beginnings. It takes a passionate individual or group to not only ignite that spark but keep the flame burning brightly. And there could be no better example of such an individual than John Goldstein and his associations with the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise Central, the Gold Coast Marathon, and the Southport Yacht Club.
As we find ourselves in the throes of the Gold Coast Marathon Weekend here in Main Beach, it’s fitting to celebrate the legacy of this unique man, John Goldstein, whose vision and tenacity all those years ago gave birth to an event that continues to enrich the Gold Coast community and beyond. His journey and achievements are a testament to the real and raw spirit of resilience, perseverance, and unwavering belief in community.
The Gold Coast Marathon, now a defining feature of the Gold Coast and Main Beach, is more than just a symbol of fitness and health. It serves as a conduit for people to confront their life challenges, individually and collectively. The Challenge of the Gold Coast Marathon became the surrogate face of hope beyond the many different challenges in our lives.
The collective magic of a community of runners not only lifts us to rise above our conscious best, but also inspires others to do the same. As the starting gun fires at 6:15 am on a crisp Gold Coast morning, thousands of goals, dreams, and life hurdles begin to merge. As the race progresses, a unified community emerges, all striving together to cross a symbolic finish line.
John Goldstein’s legacy within the Gold Coast region is well-documented, but the journey to his achievements is a remarkable story of community building. His entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to community wellness, and enduring connection to the Gold Coast community have elevated him to an influential figure in the region’s history. His work is a poignant reminder of the extraordinary impact of individuals who dare to envision the possibilities and then make them a reality.
Creating possibilities and turning them into the possible:
His brainchild, the Gold Coast Marathon, originated from a call to action by the Rotary World President for health-focused initiatives. What began as a local event organised by a fledgling Rotary Club, has metamorphosed into a globally recognised marathon that attracts participants from around the world. This event embodies Goldstein’s enthusiasm for health, fitness, and community spirit, and his relentless drive and determination were fundamental to its inception and enduring success.
John’s ties to the Gold Coast run deep and extend beyond the marathon. A respected member of the Southport Yacht Club, his love for sailing and the water was evident. His association with Main Beach and the broader Gold Coast community underlines his commitment to local engagement and communal growth.
Simultaneously, the Goldstein family name has become synonymous with the Gold Coast region due to its popular family bakery. The business, renowned for its traditional European-style products, has been a staple in the Gold Coast community for decades. Goldstein’s decision to sell his share in the bakery didn’t diminish the family business’s reputation, which continues to epitomize resilience, hard work, and commitment to quality.
The flourishing, active, and engaged Gold Coast community of today is a testament to John Goldstein’s successful community endeavors. Through his dedication to health and fitness, love for his community, and entrepreneurial spirit, Goldstein has exemplified how authentic passion for people and their shared community can ignite transformation and leave a lasting legacy.
The Gold Coast Marathon, a symbol of unity and community spirit, continues to inspire generations of fitness enthusiasts and community leaders. The bakery, a cherished local establishment, maintains the Goldstein family tradition of quality and community connection. These ventures embody Goldstein’s commitment to his community and encapsulate his legacy of community building.
John Goldstein’s legacy is an enduring testament to his love for people, health, and community.
As a local business entrepreneur, John Goldstein made significant contributions. The establishment of the cherished Goldstein family bakery is a testament to his hard work and dedication. His role as a Rotarian and co-founder of the Gold Coast Marathon, as well as his relationship with the Southport Yacht Club, demonstrate how an individual’s passion and determination can leave a lasting impact on an entire community. I think that is a life well lived and serves as an extraordinary example of community building at its finest. John’s legacy highlights the incredible transformative power that resides within individuals and their communities especially when they unite for a shared purpose.
Why the focus on John, the Marathon Man? Because he embodies the essence of community building—creating value over time, from which everyone benefits. We only get one shot at life and John sets a really high bar by blending many successes to one end – a gift that keeps on giving.
