Hidden Gems deep within the jungles of MacIntosh Park
Embarking on a Journey Through the Land of Puppets
In the heart of Main Beach, hidden deep within the lush jungles of MacIntosh Park, lies a sanctuary where imaginations come to life. This enchanting realm is the home of the Queensland Theatre of Puppetry (QTOP), a place where imaginations are woven into their reality by the hands of a special man with extraordinary talents—Phil Bell, affectionately known as the Puppet Man. For over four decades, Phil has been a steadfast presence, bringing joy and wonder to countless children and families through his dedication to the art of puppetry.

A Stroll Through the Enchanted Jungle
As you meander through the park’s meandering trails, the air is alive with the melodies of nature. Peacocks, with their iridescent feathers shimmering in the dappled sunlight, strut gracefully along the pathways. Doves coo softly from the branches above, while pheasants and swans add their own touch of elegance to the scene. The lush greenery and cascading streams create a serene backdrop, inviting you to pause and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this natural sanctuary.
The Guardians of the Park
In this enchanted setting, the puppets stand as the vigilant guardians and gatekeepers of MacIntosh Park. Their presence is not merely ornamental; they are the custodians of the park’s history and spirit. Without their enduring legacy, the park as we know it today might not exist. Their stories, brought to life through the art of puppetry, weave a tapestry of imagination and wonder that has captivated visitors for generations.

A Commitment to Service
Phil’s dedication extends beyond the stage. All proceeds from his shows are donated to the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation, specifically benefiting the children’s ward. This ongoing support has been instrumental in providing life-saving equipment and resources for young patients. For instance, funds raised have been used to purchase portable home spirometers for children with respiratory conditions, enabling them to monitor their lung function from home.
As Vicky James, Fundraising Manager at the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation, stated:
“Phil gives these stories even more depth as he contributes funds from the entry fee to help sick kids in our local public hospitals. Some of the equipment purchased from QTOP donations have helped children in the inpatients unit.”
She further highlighted the impact of Phil’s contributions:
“Phil’s puppet shows have funded so many various pieces of equipment that allows the amazing healthcare workers with the best chance of helping these little patients. Items for dental and oral health for children aged 4 to 10 years of age. Funds have created a child friendly space in the plaster rooms providing distraction therapy while plaster casts are applied and removed. Bili-blankets to treat babies with life-threatening jaundice and a portable tympanometer machine that offers a full diagnostic hearing assessment that helps over 2000 children each year, plus so many others.”
She concluded with heartfelt gratitude:
“The Gold Coast Hospital Foundation team and the dedicated paediatric health care team are forever grateful to Phil and his incredible puppet shows that make a huge difference to sick children on the Gold Coast. Thank you is never enough.”
