In 1966 it gained it's name because it was the main surf beach for the town of Southport.

Who was ‘Philip Park’ named after? The Main Beach Progress Association applied for the Open Space on The Spit be named after Prince Philip in reference to his support of the saving the Franklin River from being dammed in Tasmania.
