Main Beach Roading upgradesthe gateway to many popular cultural precincts, the Sundale Bridge, Gold Coast Highway, Waterways Drive and Macarthur Parade are experiencing significant congestion.

Commencing: Late August 2019
Completion: Late 2021
Cost: $34 million

We’re improving traffic flow in the heart of the Gold Coast so you can spend less time on the road, and more time enjoying our beautiful city.

As the gateway to a number of popular cultural precincts, the Sundale Bridge, Gold Coast Highway, Waterways Drive and Macarthur Parade are experiencing significant congestion.

Drivers travelling from The Spit to Southport can experience delays of up to 35 minutes during peak times. Without intervention, by 2041 the delay could increase by up to two hours.

To help keep traffic moving, we’re delivering a number of upgrades to increase network capacity along this popular route. This includes adding a fifth lane on the Sundale Bridge, and upgrading Waterways Drive, Macarthur Parade and associated intersections.

Once the project is complete, it’s projected that trips from The Spit to Southport will be reduced to around eight minutes during peak times.

This project is part of our ongoing investment in our road network.

Construction update

Late August – November 2019

Early works commence late August with the relocation of services on the Sundale Bridge, and at the Macarthur Parade/Seaworld Drive intersection.

We’re also doing some civil works on Waterways Drive. This includes widening the road to extend the second eastbound lane on Waterways Drive through to Seaworld Drive, and upgrading street lighting and storm water drainage.

From this time, there’ll be minor changes to how you access the transport network in the area. We’ll do our best to let you know in advance of any changes by updating this page regularly. You can also sign up to receive updates straight to your inbox.

We encourage all road users to take extra care when workers are in the area and observe traffic signs and speed restrictions. We apologise for the inconvenience and we’ll do our best to minimise disruptions. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Notices

Waterways Drive off-peak lane closure
To undertake drainage and median works on Waterways Drive, we need to close one lane for a few hours a day. This work will be delivered on and off for a few weeks at a time until November 2019.

We plan to use the off-peak hours on weekdays to deliver this work as it is too noisy to be undertaken at night. Only one lane will be closed at any one time. This ensures that one lane, in each direction, remains open during off peak times. During peak times and weekends all lanes will be open on Waterways Drive.

Night works (Macarthur Parade and Waterways Drive)
To complete works safely, and reduce the impact on road users, we need to do some night works (temporary traffic diversions may also be required at times). We’ll be working to ensure disruptions are minimised and, where possible, noisy works will be scheduled early in the work period.

Night works

take place between 7pm and 6am from:

23 to 27 September 2019
30 September to 4 October 2019
(Timing subject to change)

Please take extra care when workers are in the area and observe road signs and speed restrictions. Thank you for your patience.
