This 778lb tuna changed my world
As a young boy I ravenously devoured photos of enormous marlin, sharks, and swordfish, but it was always the giant tuna that particularly inspired me. I pictured myself close-up beside one, admiring a bullet-shaped body so broad that I could not reach around it. I imagined touching it, running my hands over its streamlining, feeling a body so massive and with such taut muscle that it promised incomprehensible power and speed.
Chasing Dreams
I yearned just to even see such a magnificent fish, let alone catch one. And yet I also imagined the incomparable thrill as it screamed off against my rod and reel.
It’s true that dreams if pursued can come true. I chased my dream, and in August 2011 it became a reality.
The dream begins
It happened off the small coastal port of Souris, on the east coast of Prince Edward Island, close to Nova Scotia in eastern Canada. Ken Fraser, the IGFA All-Tackle World Record holder for bluefin, was standing by my side when my free-drifting mackerel was inhaled at breakneck speed. My reel’s spool ripped from standstill to blur in a millisecond, it’s terrifying howl so daunting that I felt genuinely frightened to pick up the strike.
The battle was every bit as brutal, backbreaking, and electrifying as I had imagined, but as the hours ticked by we listened to radio reports of Hurricane Irene pushing its way up towards us. It had just smashed Boston and New York, so we found ourselves in a race to land my fish before the wind arrived.
That hurricane rattled our cottage throughout that night as I lay awake, grinning, reliving every moment of that life-changing day.
My head still spins at the memories of countless giant tuna jostling to take the herring we fed them right beside the boat, and the blistering runs of the other giants we caught and then tagged and released.
The dream evolves
The trip was such a mind-blowing experience that I just had to return and share it with others. Over subsequent years I arranged trips to fish for giant bluefin, hosting anglers from around the world who used my contacts and knowledge of the best times, best areas, and best boats to get straight into the action. Every member of every trip caught giant bluefin, all of which were released. My last tuna was estimated to weigh 1100 pounds (500kg)!
I’ve also arranged trips to fish the world’s hotspots catching huge yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, sailfish, swordfish, and world record wahoo, among other specialty targets.
